Back in the studio

"Get your cans on and let's roll some tape." That is to say, "pass me the headphones and press record on the computer." We've been spending time with our good friend and producer Lloyd Peterson, in his well appointed and oh so comfy home studio, working on the next Dust Poets record. Murray has been pumping out some great new tunes and the performances so far have been thrilling - and we haven't even got to the tambourine parts yet. It is always amazing to watch a new record come together and we're working hard and having fun. With everyone's crazy summer schedules - book stores to run, weddings, etc. - it's taking some time. But every day we've spent in the studio has been a blast and we're looking forward to getting back at it early in the fall.

flaming manholes and other stories

Our early May New England tour is in the books, and a very excellent time was had by all. Too bad our gig in Cambridge at the Harvard Square Mayfair was cancelled due to flaming manholes. We briefly considered changing our band name in honour of the blazing metal discs, but thought it was probably already taken. Binghamton rocked as usual, we saw our friends Callie and Jen in New Paltz, we LOVED hanging out in Vermont - the folks in Ripton know how to have a good time and treated us like family. Since our agent had clearly done the tour routing while drinking heavily, we drove through Albany about 14 times that week - but found great coffee, serious Mexican food, and some wicked architecture in the NY capital.

Between the tours

We didn't want to leave BC. A million blooming cherry trees can't be wrong! It was a great tour with old friends, new fans, stunning scenery, and even a round of golf in Cache Creek. Here's a video of Walk Away from Joe's Garage in Courtenay where we played and stayed til the wee hours. Lots of ex-Brandonoids in attendance! We've been laying down tracks in a Winnipeg recording studio this week, but we start a 9-date tour through Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York with a concert in Perth ON this Friday. See you there!

Band BC Bound

Off to BC this week for a lovely little Canada Council supported 7-date tour of Canada's Pacific paradise. We have three dates on the Island to kick things off, where we haven't played since the beautiful summer of '04. It's about time! Then we hit the mainland for shows in Vancouver, Ashcroft, Kelowna, and Rossland. Rumour has it Sean is bringing his snare and busted cymbal in lieu of the ratty suitcase for this trip, since it went over so well in Alberta last month...

tennessee trip ends on the prairies

We spent a fantastic week in Tennessee Feb 21-28, enjoying a combination of great gigs, the monster party that is the Folk Alliance Conference, and a three day rehearsal binge in Memphis hosted at Nancy's Fabulous House of Music. We played gigs in Madisonville, Franklin, and Nashville and the southern hospitality and love of music hit us full force at every show. Can't wait to get back there!

Western Canada Tour Post-Mortem

We're all home again after another adventure-filled romp across the prairies and northern Ontario. We saw lots of new and exotic places, got to drive on many kms of snowy black-iced highways, and participate in our first ever gennewine Saskabush heifer-herdin' cattle drive - on actual horses. Check out the Images page for evidence... The concerts were great too, and we enjoyed road-testing some new songs that we'll recording once Murray gets back from two months of exotic game hunting in the Himalayan foothills of India.

Holy November, It's Western Canada

Back in the van, babaaays.....we've got 11 shows over 14 days in 4 different provinces. Now I'm not much for math, but that just might be a lot of driving. Luckily Gordie's got his air brakes ticket and lots of them little white pills you get at the truck stops - so we should be juuuuust fine. But click on over to the LIVE page to get all the details on our fabulous AB-SK-MB-N.ON tourpalooza. Cheers!

The Great Summer It Was...

Summer is gone, but the memories live on...and most of us need to do some dry-cleaning. We finished off August in style, playing at Summerfolk in Owen Sound before heading back to the 'Toba for some shows in the homeland. Summerfolk was a brilliant weekend - they treated the musicians so well and we got to hang with some amazing people, some who we've known for a while (Genticorum, Evelyn Parry, Modern Man) and some we'd only just met (Farewell Drifters, James Stephens). The volunteers, the food, the jam sessions were all fabulous. Jim Cuddy was great to see up close, and it was a bonus that Kathleen Edwards was playing fiddle and singing backup in his band!

FURTHER FESTIVAL FOLLIES

Falcon Ridge was pure amazing fun. Those crazy New Englanders know how to have a good time down on the farm! The music, the dancing, the brilliant campsites, the ultra-pro stage crews, the steady supply of veggie bacon - it all made for a great time. The weekend also ended amusingly when Corey made the motel clerk kick his door in at 7am so he could get his luggage and get the waiting airport shuttle! But now it's off to Summerfolk for more festival adventures...

Festival Season

The Dust Poets are forsaking the setting sun this summer as we head east for our summer festival fix. In June it was the Detroit Festival of the Arts where we had the pleasure of sharing an evening stage with fellow Canadians Genticorum and the Wailin' Jennys. This month we play the closing slot at the Middlebury Festival on the Green in Vermont, sharing the night with another Canadian, Harry Manx.

Winter Tour Spectacular

We're home again after a terrific 4-week gig binge through most of February and the first week of March. We visited Memphis for the Folk Alliance conference (I still have the smell of BBQ in my suit), played shows in new places like Lemont PA, Framingham MA, and Picton ON, and managed to dodge several huge snowstorms around Lake Ontario! ...

Mad Dash to Memphis!

We're back in Toronto for a brief supply stop before heading waaay down south to Memphis (hello Graceland) for the Folk Alliance Conference. This two day drive follows yesterday's punishing 10 hour run back to TO from somewhere in the middle earth of Vermont! Needless to say everyone is a bit dopey today, but we're psyched for a rather hectic weekend of showcasing and schmoozing. Good times!

Back on the Wintery Road

We're back on the road next week, braving the blustery winter weather in Ontario with hopes of making it south to Memphis. On the way down we stop in New York state and Vermont, Massachusetts and Pennsylvanian on the way back. All of the gig details are on the live page. In Memphis we'll be attending the International Folk Alliance conference where we showcase the butts out of our polyester slacks with the hopes of turning heads and booking gigs on the international stage.

New Year Seems Nice So Far

While most of the Dust Poets are wallowing in a post-holiday sugar coma, lead singer Murray Evans is touching up his sunburn and trying to get the sand out of his knickers during the final days of his two-week Maui vacation. Sean and Karla hosted the Saskatchewan parents for a balmy green Christmas in Toronto, while Gord and Corey were back in Manitoba for a prairie holiday of curling, poker, and rye-and-cokes with the in-laws...

7 Nights In North Ontario

The Dust Poets have just returned to the Toronto homebase after seven fantastic shows in a row across northern Ontario, hitting Pic River, both Sault Ste Maries, Waubaushene, and all points in between. DP Back From the "Really Short Homeland Tour"

We returned to the ancestral lands of Manitoba for a brief five-date tour over Canada Day weekend. We played a basement house concert, a sticky-floored Irish pub, a country rec centre, a monitor-less beachfront flatbed trailer, and one sweaty and drunken country music festival!
